Home Gym Fitness Equipment

December 25th, 2010

Exercise is proven to prevent many chronic conditions. Heart disease, high blood pressure, dementia, and diabetes all respond well to regular exercise. Fitness is a step beyond; it requires regular performance of both aerobic and anaerobic exercise. Good fitness levels can be obtained by doing calisthenics, but most folks prefer a safer and more weather-friendly method. This means setting aside space for a home gym.

The first element of any home gym is the choice of aerobic exercise equipment. There are several choices, depending on the space and resources available. The compact and economical solution is an upright exercise bike. They take up little space and are easily moved when necessary. Sitting on the narrow and confining seat can be uncomfortable, however. The best solution to that problem is a recumbent bike. The chair-like seating position is much less stressful than the saddle of an upright bike, and one can read or watch TV while exercising. Both bikes have the advantage of being low-impact, since there is no weight on the joints.

Another popular type of aerobic exercise equipment is the powered treadmill. They can be adjusted to deliver anything from a slow walk to an all-out sprint. They do place a load on the joints, but most treadmills have a shock-absorbing platform that reduces impact compared to walking or running on pavement. Another popular machine is the elliptical trainer. It is designed to replicate the path followed by the foot when running. It does place a load on the joints from standing, but is less stressful than a treadmill.

There are two other candidates for aerobic training. One is the stair-stepper, but today it is used mostly for firming the butt muscles. It isn’t really suitable for genuine aerobic exercise. Another is the rowing machine. A rowing machine gives an excellent aerobic workout, and is low impact. It has the advantage of working both the upper and lower body, but it can place stress on the back.

Proper fitness training requires the development of strength as well. Barbells or dumbbells can provide a worthwhile workout, but a resistance training machine makes the routine go more quickly. These vary from universal machines with several stations, using weights and pulleys, to high-tech devices dependent on elastic resistance. These modern machines are light in weight, and usually collapsible for storage. Some of them are surprisingly inexpensive.

Getting Cardio Exercise at Home Without Exercise Equipment

December 22nd, 2010

Cardio exercise is one of the most important aspects of weight loss. Many people consider purchasing cardio equipment in order to get their exercise done. A treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine all seem like they would get you motivated to start exercising.

However, how many people do you know that have one of these machines that acts like a clothes rack. Or perhaps it’s stuffed under their bed. People buy these machines and then they don’t use them. This is a complete waste of money!

On the other hand, you also have people that think that because they don’t have cardio equipment, they can’t do any exercising at all. This is also a crazy idea.

If you want to exercise to lose weight, there’s really no need to purchase exercise equipment. There are plenty of ways that you can get cardio exercise at home without exercise equipment.

The best way to start is simply by going for a walk. This allows you to get your cardio exercise and some fresh air at the same time. Make sure that you prepare for the weather. If it’s a hot day, bring along a hat and extra water. If it’s cold, dress warmly.

Once you’ve gotten used to walking, you may want to start jogging. This is one of the best methods for losing weight because it burns so many calories. Of course, it’s intimidating to try to start jogging if you’ve never done it before. Start slowly by jogging for short bursts, followed by a walking recovery period.

You don’t need a stairmaster if you have stairs! Walking up and down stairs is a great way to get an aerobic workout. If you don’t have stairs in your house, look for areas around your town that might have stairs that you can walk up – perhaps a park or school.

If you’re not ready to go outside to get your exercise, you can do jumping jacks or jogging in place inside your home. Make sure that you still wear supportive sneakers so that you don’t injure yourself.

Many people enjoy working out to aerobics videos. These days, you can find videos that will give you a great workout, while still being fun. Look especially for videos that are based on dance moves. Or just turn on some loud music and dance.
