What Kind of Home Gym Exercise Equipment Should You Get?

January 5th, 2011

Have you ever thought of going to the gym to stay fit? Have you ever obsessed about having a better, healthier body, and thought that you needed way too many things to achieve it? Have you ever seen a dress or a shirt and thought that it would look good on you, if only you had the right body for it? There are many reasons why you should start thinking about keeping fit. Not only will you look good on the outside, but you can have a lot of good things happening inside your body as well. You can feel more energized, strengthen your immune system, and even get rid of toxins because you work out. However, your apprehension is understandable: gym memberships cost money, workouts take time, and you may not always have the luxury of both.

The Advantage of Having it All in One

You can, however, invest in your own home gym. This is especially true if you have no money to spare on a gym membership, if you have no gym in your area, or if you feel that you would be able to work out better without other people standing close to you. Having a home gym, moreover, can be a good investment for the entire family. You all can use the equipment, versus you spending money on a gym membership that only you will use. Having a home gym, as mentioned, is an investment, so you will want to make a good one.

What kinds of equipment should you get? One option that you may want to look into is the all-in-one machine, which may have a lot of levers, weights, and other accessories that will allow you to work out all your muscle groups at once. Some models can have a treadmill-like platform that will allow you to work all your leg muscles, plus some handles that will allow you to twist your body and work out your upper torso. These models are built for home use, although some gyms will carry them to cater to clients who do not have enough time to spend on their workout. In the home, the same advantage applies: not only do you save money on buying individual equipment, and not only do you save space by having a single machine, you also save time on your workout because you can work on all your muscle groups at once.

A disadvantage of an all-in-one, however, is that you will often encounter difficulties in either assembling it, or in keeping it intact. Not all machines are built alike: you might come across machines that were not made well and that fall apart after a few years’ use; you might come across machines that cost a lot but don’t work even with if you exercise every day. Moreover, you may not need a full body workout: you might want to tone certain muscles or lose weight in certain areas of your body. In this case, you may need to isolate certain muscle groups and you may have to build your home gym in parts.

The Advantage of Having Separate Equipment

You can buy weights sets in order to isolate certain muscle groups of your body, and then work them out separately, each of them at their own pace. You can buy separate pieces of exercise equipment that are designed to target different muscle groups, and are built to be adjusted at different degrees of resistance so that you can keep building up workout difficulty as you go along. You may also want to buy standard pieces of equipment to outfit your home gym. These may include a treadmill or a Nordic Track, depending on what you need to work out.

These are only a few suggestions and examples on what you may need for your home gym. For more information, talk to your doctor about what exercises are good for you, and what exercises you should not do. For instance, you may have bone or muscle disorders that can be amplified if you do not exercise properly; or you may have a heart or respiratory condition that can keep you from exercising well. Think of all these and do a lot of research before you buy any equipment for your home gym.

Home Fitness Equipment Versus a Gym Membership

December 12th, 2010

The debate: should you pay for a membership to a gym? Or should you buy some home fitness equipment, instead? Although this may seem like a simple question, it is mostly just a question of money. Both gym memberships and home fitness equipment can be very expensive. If you have the money, definitely buy both. If you do not… here is a quick guide to help you decide which is best for you.

Benefits of a gym membership:

? Exercising around other people can be highly motivating – it might just motivate you stay on that treadmill for 10 minutes longer (even if it is just because you do not want to look foolish getting off too soon).

? Gyms often have classes that you can drop in on. Again, there are benefits to working out with other people. Also, many of these classes are just as fun as they are good for you. And you can make it a point to visit the same classes day after day – it is a good way to get you to the gym.

? Gyms have multiple types of equipment and weights – a lot more than you would be able to fit into your home. At a gym, you have a choice between the elliptical machine, a treadmill, a recumbent bike, a rowing machine, etc. There are also multiple weight machines for you to use – each one focusing on a different muscle.

? The equipment is kept up-to-date. Your gym might have some of the newest and greatest exercise equipment available.

? At a gym, you can hire a personal trainer (and sometimes you can even get one for free!). A personal trainer can help you decide what sort of workout is best for your body type and to accomplish the goals that you have in mind. Some gyms even have nutritionists on staff.

? Some gyms have swimming pools and saunas, etc.

Benefits of home fitness equipment:

? You do not have to pay monthly or yearly fees. Once you buy your home fitness equipment, you have few other costs associated with it.

? You can hop right out of bed to go use your home fitness equipment – you do not need to make sure that your hair looks all right, and you do not need to waste time and money driving to the gym.

? You can put in a movie or watch whatever TV you choose to when you are exercising at home.

? If you start to feel sick, hungry, thirsty, or need to go to the bathroom during the middle of a workout, you can stop right then without feeling embarrassed.

? You can exercise at any time you wish, night or day.

? Many types of home fitness equipment can be easily stored away when you are not using it, so you do not have to worry about sacrificing space in your house.

All in all, the choice is completely up to you. There are many people who buy home fitness equipment, only to let it get dusty, sitting in the garage. Likewise, there are many people who buy year-long gym memberships and then find that they stop going after just a few months. No matter what, though, it is a good idea to have a few simple pieces of home fitness equipment at home – like 2 five or ten pound barbells – in case you ever feel inspired to work out but do not feel like leaving.

And if you find that you do not have enough money for either a membership or equipment for your home, why not go take a jog or a walk outside? Go on a hike, play in the park, or ride your bike. The most important thing is that you find an outlet to get some exercise, regardless of whether it is at a gym, at home, or outside.
